Two Engaging Guest Lectures with Practical Insights
Yesterday in Munich, today online – two captivating guest lectures as part of Gunnar Gombert's professorship in Real Estate Management. Together with Isabella Kaufmann, newly appointed at the Ministry of Construction and formerly with Immobilien Freistaat Bayern (IMBY), Gunnar and his students explored a topic that might initially seem dry but unveils fascinating dimensions upon closer inspection: Public Real Estate Management.

Bavaria as a Real Estate Powerhouse
With around 184,000 properties, including globally renowned sites like the English Garden and Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria is one of Germany’s largest property owners. These assets are managed in cooperation with the Bavarian State Administration of Palaces, Gardens, and Lakes. Since the founding of IMBY in 2006, Bavaria has pursued professional and strategic real estate management.

Topics Covered in the Lecture
The lecture focused on essential aspects of public real estate management, including: Land management, Portfolio strategies or Legal foundations of property transactions. Theoretical insights were enriched by practical examples, illustrating the diversity and relevance of these topics.

Practical Examples: From Space Valley to Downtown Munich
Space Valley: The acquisition of land in Ottobrunn by Bavaria for TU Munich as part of the "Bavaria One" initiative.
Historic Properties: The Hans Albers villa on Lake Starnberg and the historically significant Obersalzberg.
Urban Development and Industry: Projects such as residential quarter development in Landsberg am Lech or job creation through the chemical industry in Altötting.
Innovative Companies: Land sales to Apple and leasehold developments with Signa in Munich's city center.
A special thank-you to Isabella Kaufmann for her expertise and the impressive insights into the complex world of public real estate management. These lectures vividly demonstrated how strategic and diverse the management of public properties can be.
